Yes, yes, I know…literally, there’s no way to objectively prove that 2016 was the best year for music in the 2010s (which I define as 2011-2020, in the same way “the aughts” were 2001-2010, listen to basically every other episode of Indiecast for further explanation of this phenomenon). There are plenty of music writers who turned 25 during what I consider the weaker years (i.e., the odd-numbered ones), which means that they are hardwired to proclaim 2011 or 2013 the greatest year in the history of recorded music, not just the past decade. And though I can never get a great picture of the framed 2012 Pitchfork Festival poster hanging in my office, just take a gander at this lineup.
